A revamped web-based user interface for the Herschel Science Archive (HSA 8.0)

A new version (v8.0) of the Herschel Science Archive (HSA) has been released, offering a completely revamped web-based user interface, improved performance and a better user experience.

The new web interface incorporates all the functionalities previously provided by the old Java-based interface, plus some new ones like:
 - a better separation of the different type of Herschel data products available, currently consisting of Standard Pipeline Generated (SPG) products and User Provided Data Products (UPDPs), both for making queries and in the way the results are displayed;
 - visualization of the accurate footprints projected onto the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) image of the field;
 - a new search functionality based on associated refereed publications, providing links to the Herschel data used for these publications and to the corresponding publication registry in ADS, including the possibility to search for observations in the archive without known publications;
 - on-the-fly generated basic statistics of the results obtained, presented as histograms in a dedicated window and updated interactively as you refine your query.

You can access the new interface at:

HSA now fully populated with legacy pipeline products

In the last few months we have completed the final bulk reprocessing of the whole contents of the Herschel Science Archive (HSA) using a set of different HIPE 14 versions of the software (14.1, 14.2.0, 14.2.1 or 14.2.2, depending on the instrument and observing mode).

This means that the HSA is now populated with the final 'legacy' products generated in an automated fashion by the Herschel SPG pipelines.

No further pipeline reprocessing is envisaged, therefore any further addition to the contents of the archive in the future will come in the form of interactively generated Highly Processed Data Products (HPDPs), enhanced products provided by experts in the Herschel ground segment, or as User Provided Data Products (UPDPs), collected from inputs provided by the community, an area on which we will be concentrating our efforts in 2017, the last year of Herschel Post-Operations.

An overview of the wide range of Herschel Data Products distributed (or to be distributed soon) through the HSA can be found at:

Legacy version of the Herschel data reduction and data analysis software (HIPE 15.0) released

We are pleased to inform you that a new version of the Herschel Interactive Data Processing Environment software (HIPE 15.0) is available for download at:

https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/herschel/hipe-download

Together with the installers for the various operating systems that we support you can also find in this web page updated documentation applicable to this version of the software.

Note that no further development related to HIPE is planned for the remaining Herschel Post-Operations. HIPE 15.0 must therefore be considered the 'legacy version' of the Herschel data reduction and data analysis software.

For information about 'What's New in HIPE 15.0' you can visit:

Please, let us know through the helpdesk if you have any problems during the downloading/installation process, or with any other aspect of this new version of HIPE and we will assist you.

The European Far-Infrared Space Roadmap

The initiative that led to the 'European Far-Infrared Space Roadmap' was borne out from discussions in the Herschel Users' Group (HUG). The work started in early 2015 and the first draft was prepared in the spring of 2016. It was presented to the community in the EWASS 2016 Symposium S4 'Future Prospects for Far-Infrared Space Astrophysics' held in Athens in July 2016, and made generally available. The work was concluded in late 2016, taking feedback received into account, and the Roadmap was posted on arXiv in January 2017.

The 'European Far-Infrared Space Roadmap' is available here:
